4 TIPS FOR LAST-MINUTE STUDYING

If you are reading this article, it probably means you have exams around the corner and wondering how best to approach last-minute studying. Fret not, we have four key tips on last-minute studying to share with you...

#1 MAKE A TIMETABLE

It may be tempting to jump in right away and get started but the first step is always to manage your time and workflow effectively to prioritize the subjects accordingly. Remember the saying - Fail to plan, plan to fail.

It sounds simple but studies show that failing to manage your time effectively can lead to chaos down the road and you will end up feeling overwhelmed. Plan how much time you can dedicate to each subject and don't forget to add a little time for rest and relaxation as well otherwise you may burnout.

#2 ISOLATE IN YOUR STUDY AREA

To study last minute, you need to maximize the time you have and avoid distractions. Your study area could be your bedroom, living room or even a public library, it doesn’t matter. What matters is learning to focus:

  • Turn off or silence mobile phones if you feel you are being distracted by messages or social media.
  • If you prefer studying in silence then find a quiet corner of the house or use noise-cancelling earphones.
  • You can set up a study zone anywhere in your home however do choose a place with minimal interruptions from family members and pets. Make sure all your study material and stationary is within easy reach.

#3 IDENTIFY YOUR WEAKNESSES

Making the most out of last-minute studying involves improving on your weak spots. Focus on the topics you don’t know or struggle the most with instead of attempting to memorise the entire syllabus - which you can't do

Try taking a practice exam or answering a few sample questions to see how you score if you are not sure where to begin. Brushing up on your weak spots will usually have the biggest impact on your overall grades compared to chasing perfection on topics you are already well-versed with.

#4 EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWERS TO OTHERS

Don't live in isolation, share your thoughts and concerns with friends and classmates (but don't get too carried away). Being able to explain something to someone else is the gold-standard test for true understanding.

If you’re looking to get the most out of your last-minute study, this is among the best methods to test how much you understand the subject matter.

STAY CALM AND KEEP STUDYING

It's easy to throw in the towel and give up as our minds are inclined to t. However, you would be pleasantly surprised how last-minute studying can help if done effectively.

The most important step will always be to stay calm and persevere. The more you panic, the more likely you are to forget or confuse yourself - so stay level-headed and persevere no matter how futile it may seem!

Worst-case scenario you fail and the fears you had that it was too late to start studying were right. But the best-case scenario is you do well enough to earn a passing mark, or better!

So don't give up without trying your best!
